What do IUD strings feel like? (Mirena)?

I'm trying to locate them? I'm unsure if it's the actual iud or a string? I called the doctor they want me to come in tomorrow, but if pain is intolerable to go to the ER. Pain is tolerable only because I just gave birth 8 weeks ago naturally. Can anyone help?
