How do I deal with intolerable work conditions until I can find another job?

For the last year or two, we have had a lot of lay offs and big changes. While I am thankful I have a job, working at this company has become unbearable. There is alot of bickering amongst other coworkers and management is doing nothing about this. They have made it clear that they do not care if the employees are unhappy. They don't have time to deal with it. A few months ago, they put this power tripping, racist jerk as one of the leads. This guy does not know how to do anything on the bench. But he sure knows how to kiss a**. The manager loves him and takes his side on everything. This guy knows that, so he is power tripping. If we don't respect and obey him, he threatens to tell the maneger. If he doesn't like someone, he treats that person badly. Over half the lab has threatened to quit or find another job if this continues. The maneger doesn't care. This guy favors people of his own race. There is no point in filing a complaint with human resources or the maneger, because they always take his side. Since I am helpless to do anything about this, I have started looking for other employment. I cannot take it here anymore! I am trying to hang in there as this workplace abuse continues, but I am loosing it. I need a job, which is why I have not just walked out. But, I don't know how much more I can take. Five people have already told the maneger they would quit. Why wont the maneger do something about this? My stomach forms a knot when it comes time to go to work. I can't sleep a night very well because I am so unhappy here. How do I deal?
